ACLP recognizes that practicums have become a barrier within the pathway to the child life profession. Pre-internship experiences, such as practicums, are not required by the Child Life Certification Commission and ACLP does not endorse practicums or other pre-internship programs.
In 1922, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital was the first hospital to establish early play programs and a hospital school program for children. The Department of Child and Family Life is comprised of a variety of child life disciplines, including certified 4 board certified music therapists, 2 art therapists, a certified therapeutic recreation specialist, 6 learning specialists, 4 patient techNlogy specialists, 4 child life assistants, and over 40 child life specialists.

The Child and Family Life Department is currently functioning at full capacity with on going capacity limitations with playroom staff, and the slow reintegration of volunteers. A Child Life internship continues to be offered with the practicum returning in January of 2022.
